How quickly should I address an AC that is not cooling?

Why is my AC blowing warm air?

Why does my AC keep turning on and off?
Short cycling commonly comes from a weakening capacitor, a compressor tripping on thermal overload, a pressure switch opening due to a dirty condenser or low charge, a thermostat in direct sunlight, or loose control wiring. It stresses the compressor and prevents proper dehumidification. Time several cycles and share the pattern when you request service.
Why is ice forming on my AC?
Coils freeze from too little warm airflow across them or too little refrigerant in them. Airflow problems come from clogged filters, closed registers, dirty coils or a weak blower; low charge comes from a leak. Turn cooling off, set the fan to ON to thaw, change the filter and open all vents. Never chip the ice — coil tubing punctures easily.
Why is my indoor AC unit leaking water?
The condensate the system removes could not drain. Usual causes: a clogged condensate line, a rusted or cracked drain pan, a disconnected fitting, or a frozen coil now melting. Turn cooling off, dry standing water before it reaches drywall, and request service — especially with an attic air handler, where water travels before it is visible.
Can a dirty filter stop an AC from cooling?
Yes. A loaded filter chokes airflow across the evaporator coil, the coil runs colder than designed, moisture freezes on it, and the ice restricts airflow further. The system runs constantly and delivers very little. In dusty conditions with long run times, check monthly rather than following the interval on the package.
What does an AC capacitor do?
It stores and releases the energy that starts the compressor and fan motors and helps them run efficiently. When capacitance drifts out of spec, the outdoor unit may hum without starting, the fan may struggle, or the system may quit in afternoon heat and recover later. Capacitors are heat-sensitive, so they fail more often in hot climates. They hold a charge after power is off, so replacement is not a DIY task.
How do I know if refrigerant may be low?
The pattern is gradual: cooling that fades over weeks, longer run times, ice on the coil or copper line, and the worst performance on hot afternoons. Refrigerant is not consumed in normal operation, so low charge means a leak. Proper repair locates and repairs the leak, evacuates the system and recharges to the manufacturer's specified weight. Confirmation requires gauges, not a homeowner check.
How much does AC repair cost?
It depends on the failure. What should I check before requesting service?
Thermostat on COOL, fan on AUTO, setpoint below room temperature. Replace a loaded filter. Open supply registers and clear return grilles. Check the breaker panel once. Look for ice on the coil or line and water near the indoor unit. Note whether the outdoor unit is running, humming or silent. Those observations often shorten the diagnosis.
How often should an AC be serviced in Laredo?

Usually not. Closing too many registers raises static pressure in the duct system, reduces airflow across the evaporator coil and can push the system toward freezing. If certain rooms are consistently uncomfortable, the answer is a duct or airflow evaluation, not closed vents.
Why does my AC run constantly on hot afternoons?
Systems are sized for a design temperature, and on the hottest days a correctly sized unit can legitimately run nearly continuously. That becomes a problem when the house is still not reaching setpoint, which points to reduced capacity from a dirty coil, low charge, poor airflow or undersized equipment. Track indoor temperature over an afternoon so you can describe the gap.
