Signals worth taking seriously
- A failed compressor or a leaking evaporator coil on older equipment
- Three or more repairs in recent seasons rather than one isolated fix
- Cooling that no longer keeps up during peak afternoons even after repair
- Rising energy use with no other explanation
- Refrigerant that has become expensive or difficult to source for that system
- Repeated refrigerant loss with no repairable leak point
The 'percentage rule' myth
You will see a rule of thumb that says replace when repair costs exceed half of replacement. It is a conversation starter, not a fact. It ignores remaining equipment life, warranty status, how long you plan to stay in the home, financing realities and how much the old system costs to run each month.
A better approach: get the repair quote, get an installed replacement quote, and compare them against expected remaining life and operating cost. Then decide with numbers instead of a slogan.
Sizing matters more than brand
An oversized system cools quickly, shuts off, and leaves humidity behind — which in South Texas means a house that is cold and clammy. An undersized system never catches up in July. Proper sizing comes from a load calculation that accounts for square footage, insulation, window area and orientation, duct condition and infiltration.
Ask any provider proposing replacement whether they perform a load calculation, and be cautious of a quote based purely on 'same size as the old one'.
Ducts and installation quality
A high-efficiency system attached to leaking, undersized or poorly insulated ductwork will underperform its rating. In homes with attic duct runs, duct condition can dominate real-world results. Ask whether ducts will be inspected, sealed or modified as part of the project.
Installation workmanship — proper evacuation, correct charge by weight, proper line set handling, correct airflow setup — has more effect on long-term reliability than the brand on the cabinet.
What to compare in quotes
- Total installed price with all materials and permits identified
- Equipment model numbers and matched indoor/outdoor components
- Efficiency rating and whether the indoor coil is being replaced too
- Whether a load calculation was performed
- Duct evaluation and any planned modifications
- Manufacturer parts warranty terms and any labor coverage
- What happens to the old equipment and refrigerant
When repair is clearly the better choice
If the diagnosis is a single inexpensive part on a system that has otherwise performed reliably, repair it. Replacing functional equipment because of one capacitor is a waste of money. Keep records so you can recognize when the pattern actually changes.
