Start by checking the outdoor unit
If the indoor blower is pushing air but the outdoor unit is silent, the problem is almost always electrical: a failed capacitor, a tripped breaker, a contactor that is not pulling in, or a thermostat that is not sending a cooling call. If the outdoor unit is running and air is still warm, the problem is more likely refrigerant charge, condenser heat rejection or compressor performance.
This one observation is genuinely useful information for the service provider, so note it before you call.
Why warm air happens
- Thermostat accidentally switched to HEAT, EMERGENCY HEAT or FAN ONLY
- Fan set to ON instead of AUTO, so the blower circulates air between cooling cycles
- Tripped breaker or blown fuse feeding the outdoor unit only
- Failed run capacitor preventing the compressor or condenser fan from starting
- Low refrigerant charge from a leak in the coil, line set or fittings
- Condenser coil so dirty that heat cannot leave the refrigerant
- Compressor that hums or draws current but no longer compresses
The fan-ON trap
One of the most common non-failures we see described is a thermostat fan left in the ON position. The blower runs continuously, so between cooling cycles it circulates room-temperature or attic-warmed air through the ducts. The homeowner feels warm air at the register and assumes the AC failed.
Set the fan to AUTO for a day and see whether the complaint changes. If air is warm even while the outdoor unit is clearly running, the fan setting is not your issue.
Laredo-specific strain
Condensers in South Texas work against very high outdoor temperatures for months at a time. Heat rejection depends on clean fins and free airflow around the cabinet. Dust, caliche grit, grass clippings and landscaping crowding are all common in the region and all reduce capacity.
A condenser that is only mildly restricted may perform acceptably in spring and then produce warm supply air during a late-June afternoon. Keeping two to three feet clear around the cabinet is a reasonable homeowner habit.
Safe checks before you request service
- Set the thermostat to COOL, fan AUTO, setpoint below room temperature, then wait five minutes
- Confirm the display is not showing a schedule or hold that is overriding your setting
- Check the breaker panel for one obviously tripped breaker and reset it a single time
- Replace the air filter
- Rinse loose debris off the outside of the condenser cabinet with a garden hose — no pressure washer, no removing panels
What a technician checks
A provider will verify the thermostat call, confirm voltage at the outdoor unit, test the capacitor and contactor, read refrigerant pressures against target values for the day's conditions, and evaluate compressor amperage.
If the finding is low charge, the correct response is to locate and repair the leak, not simply to add refrigerant. Topping off a leaking system is a temporary and expensive habit.
Costs to expect
Electrical parts like capacitors sit at the low end of repair costs. Refrigerant leak repair sits much higher because it involves leak searching, repair, evacuation and recharging. Compressor work is the most expensive outcome and usually triggers a repair-versus-replace conversation.
