Tune-up versus maintenance versus repair
These words get used interchangeably, which confuses pricing conversations. A tune-up is a scheduled performance verification. Maintenance is the broader ongoing practice that includes tune-ups plus filters and cleaning. Repair is corrective work after a failure.
When comparing providers, compare the task list rather than the label. Ask what is measured, what is cleaned and what is documented.
A meaningful tune-up checklist
- Temperature split measured across the indoor coil
- Refrigerant performance verified with pressures and temperatures rather than assumed
- Capacitor microfarad readings compared against nameplate ratings
- Contactor contacts inspected for pitting and burning
- Compressor and fan motor amperage compared against rated values
- Condenser coil cleaned and cabinet cleared
- Condensate drain cleared and float switch tested
- Blower wheel and filter condition inspected
- Electrical connections checked for tightness and corrosion
- Thermostat operation and cycle behavior verified
What the numbers tell you
A good tune-up leaves you with data, not just a checkmark. Capacitance readings that have drifted below rating predict a summer failure. Amperage creeping toward nameplate maximum suggests a motor working harder than it should. A shrinking temperature split points to charge or airflow problems long before the house feels warm.
Ask for the readings. A provider who measures will happily share them.
Best timing in South Texas
Spring is the practical window. Scheduling before demand peaks means easier appointment availability and time to address findings before the system becomes essential every single day. If summer has already arrived, a mid-season check is still worthwhile, particularly for the condenser coil and drain line.
What a tune-up cannot do
- It cannot add capacity to an undersized or worn-out system
- It cannot fix duct leakage without separate duct work
- It cannot guarantee a component will not fail
- It cannot substitute for filter changes between visits
After the visit
Keep the documentation. Year-over-year readings turn into a trend line, and trends are what let you replace a capacitor in April instead of during a 100-degree Saturday. If the provider recommends repairs, ask which are urgent, which are preventive, and what happens if you defer.
