AC Repair Cost Calculator

Answer five questions and see an educational planning range for the repair you are likely facing, along with the factors that push a price toward the high or low end. This tool does not produce a quote and does not diagnose your system — it exists so you are not walking into the conversation blind.

Methodology: calculator ranges are general planning estimates based on national repair-cost benchmarks. They are not quotes, diagnoses or guaranteed local pricing. See sources & methodology.

Planning estimate only. Final pricing requires diagnosis by the service provider.

What pushes cost up

  • Sealed-system work involving refrigerant recovery and recharge
  • Older equipment using refrigerant that is being phased down
  • Difficult access such as tight attics or rooftop equipment
  • Emergency timing outside normal business hours
  • Parts that must be ordered for an uncommon model

What keeps cost down

  • Catching the problem before a second component fails
  • Common, stocked parts on mainstream equipment
  • Straightforward access to indoor and outdoor units
  • Flexible scheduling instead of emergency service
  • Manufacturer parts coverage still in effect

Calculator Questions

How accurate is this calculator?

It is a planning tool, not a quote. It maps the problem type, system type, equipment age, home size and urgency you select onto broad educational ranges built from general national repair-cost benchmarks. Real pricing depends on the actual diagnosis, the specific part, refrigerant type, equipment access and the provider's rates.

Why is the range so wide?

Because the same symptom can have very different causes. 'Not cooling' might be a $150 capacitor or a failed compressor. Until someone tests the system, an honest range has to cover both ends. The range narrows as soon as a diagnosis identifies the failed component.

Does the calculator include the diagnostic fee?

The ranges reflect typical repair pricing, which often includes or partially credits a diagnostic charge depending on the provider. Ask how the diagnostic fee is handled when you call — practices vary, and it is a fair question.

Should I get more than one price?

For a small repair, the time spent gathering quotes usually costs more than it saves. For major work — compressor, evaporator coil or replacement — comparing written proposals is worthwhile, as long as you compare the same scope, equipment and warranty terms.
